Power Industry
Scaftec have some 50 years combined experience working in the Power Sector. This experience covers Nuclear, Coal and Petrochemical power stations throughout the UK. We have carried out extensive scaffolding design work in power stations across the UK, including Sellafield, Hunterson and Cockenzie Power Stations.
Members of our design team have “Monitored Worker” status within Sellafield & Chapelcross having passed Health & Safety inductions and exams.
Some of our most recent design work has been during the decommissioning of Heat Exchangers at Chapelcross Nuclear Power Stations. This included the regular on site inspection and the adoption of Mulit-design, (now Mott MacDonald) systems.
Line Crossings:
We provide Line Crossing designs and 3rd party checks on behalf of Tone Scaffolding, working on National Grid projects for several clients in the power industry. Scaftec has developed bespoke software to streamline both the design and checking processes and continues to refine and adapt the package, incorporating new requirements such as the need to calculate wind loads in accordance with the new Eurocode (BS EN 1991-1-4: 2005).
Commercial/Domestic
Scaftec’s vast experience has been gathered working on the temporary works and scaffolding design work for town and city centre projects on both commercial and domestic projects. Projects of this nature include city office developments, multi-use leisure, retail commercial developments, new build housing and renovation work.
Recent examples of our commercial/domestic designs have been the re-development of St Enochs Centres, Glasgow, temporary roof design for Haymarket Train Station and refurbishment of the Caledonian Hotel, Edinburgh. These site have had there interesting quirks, with all facilities being open to the public during the works.
Historical & Site of Sensitivity
A number of our clients have term maintenance contract with Historic Scotland and we have assisted in the successful design and erection of scaffolds in some particularly sensitive areas. We have worked in both Edinburgh & Stirling Castle and in more remote unknown site such as World War II gun batteries in Orkney.
We have recently carried out a particularly interesting design for an access scaffold round Nelson’s Monument in Edinburgh. This design was enjoyable and challenging as the scaffold had to be fully debris netted and freestanding while located at one of the highest and most exposed locations in Edinburgh.
Public Sector
More often than not projects under this sector require the building/facility to be open to the public while the scaffold is in use. During the construction of the new maternity wind of the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow, the scaffold has to be bridged over the existing roof of the oncology ward.
This posed very interesting design challenges and regular consultation with our client and the main contractors. As part of the design, protection systems were incorporated to limit the risk to patients and visitors.
